APS Computing Equity
Since the early 2000’s it has been a mayoral priority to make Atlanta one of the top five most innovative cities in America and for the city to become the tech hub of the southeast. With those goals, high quality computing education for the existing population is necessary to ensure that Atlanta doesn’t experience the massive outmigration of longstanding legacy communities – a result of the pressure of gentrification and technical undereducation.
In partnership with Atlanta Public Schools (APS), the Constellations Center represents an innovative new relationship between higher ed institutions and K-12 districts. We help build the computing education infrastructure for APS through hybrid development of CS courses, teacher professional development, and alignment of secondary school level CS course standards with the expectation of Georgia Tech introductory level computing. Working closely with the superintendent and district leaders, we are extending the resources of Georgia Tech to strengthen the infrastructure of computing education in Atlanta Public Schools.
